Federal Regulations

Less Government Interference

Article I Section 1 of the Constitution says, “All legislative powers here in granted shall be vested in a Congress.” Unfortunately, Congress has given much of that power away to federal agencies. Congress passed 285 laws last year. Federal agencies finalized 3830 rules, with the worst offenders being the Departments of Treasury, Agriculture, Commerce, Interior, and Environmental Protection.

Compliance costs from these thousands of regulations totaled over $1 trillion in 2008, when the GDP is only $13 trillion/year. Former President Bush’s spending spree was accompanied by more than 30,000 new regulations. How many more new regulations will follow President Obama’s spending explosion and what will be the cost to Americans to comply?

Congress needs to do a better job controlling federal agencies. The excessive burden placed on Americans and American business is oppressive. Government is far too big and needs to be reduced in size. The savings from the $1 trillion in compliance costs could be better spent elsewhere or returned to the taxpayers.
